Review: City of Bones

City of Bones
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the first book in the YA magical realism series The Mortal Instruments, with spunky Clary, her doormat best friend Simon who is in love with her, and her moody and arrogant love interest Jace. The classic YA love triangle structure (e.g. like Twilight). This one has a twist at the end when Clary and Jace realise they can’t be together because they find out they are siblings. I like surprises, so this was my favourite part of the book. Perhaps underdog Simon finally has a chance? I’ve read so many YA stories that they can seem similar.
Clary discovers she has magical abilities like Jace and his friends, while Simon remains ordinary but goes along on the adventure to save the balance of power in the world by rescuing the Mortal Cup.
