Review: The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom
The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An enjoyable read about the Saxon Uhtred’s journey from being kidnapped and brought up by Vikings during childhood to switching sides to join Alfred (the Great’s) crusade to expel the Northmen and unite England under his rule. The culture and religious clashes are inevitable with Uhtred preferring to worship Odin and Thor and be a warrior, clashing dramatically with Alfred and the priest’s plans to make him a pious man of letters! This seems to be the first of a 10 book series and they aren’t short books, so I look on the series in the same way as I did the challenge of reading all of the Game of Thrones series. It’ll take a long, long time to finish Uhtred’s story! :-O
