It’s amazing this Bronze Age story survived this long and it’s the reason we know the Helen of Troy story. However, 700 BC readers may have enjoyed a 600 page poem, but the 2016 AD reader may find it hard going and less enjoyable. Homer goes into epic detail talking about the colour of chariot axles, the moods of the Gods, the physique of the various warriors and the battle gore in very slow motion and minutiae. I only got a quarter of the way and it took a year to read that, then I gave up. I’d much rather watch the movie. I do admire that his writing lasted so long and is still being read today. Not many writers can clam that.
