Review: A Place Beyond Courage

A Place Beyond Courage
A Place Beyond Courage by Elizabeth Chadwick
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the story of John Marshal. Marshall to Henry I, Stephen and then Henry II. He is a difficult character to like, being ruthless and notoriously letting his son, William Marshal at age 5 be potentially killed off as a hostage of King Stephen’s. The boy was hung above a fire to burn to death in front of his one eye, but he wouldn’t surrender his castle. Luckily he took a gamble that paid off and his young son was returned a year later, but changed. Talk about psychological trauma between father and son! But that was the way of the world then.
John Marshall divorced his weak wife under trumped up charges and married a younger and stronger wife better able to cope with his lifestyle.
A good read.
