Review: Shadows and Strongholds

Shadows and Strongholds
Shadows and Strongholds by Elizabeth Chadwick
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The author has developed a weak character well and made her interesting. Marion is unintelligent and has mental health issues. The author has really developed her voice well and the distorted view of the world through her eyes and feelings is believable. It’s unusual for a weak character to stand out and almost overshadow the stronger protagonists. In this case the protagonists are a moody knight and a the usual fiery medieval heiress. Both of whom were great lead characters. But for me Mad Marion stood out probably because she is different and her self-absorbed naivety caused endless serious battles and loss of lives, ultimately to her own detriment. Her ghost is said to haunt the base of one of Ludlow castle towers…
Hope no one ever meets a character like her in real life though. Everyone has seen the movie Fatal Attraction, right? The solution is to run away and don’t stop to help or listen or you will get sucked in and lose everything.
